A small school with a big heart!

From little things ... big things grow........

We want all of our children to:

  • Achieve personal success and excellence
  • Demonstrate ethical, social and environmental responsibility
  • Be active, happy, engaged and productive citizens within a global community

Thank you for taking the time to view our school website. We hope that you enjoy having a glimpse of our school photos, programs and activities.

The school has 225 students who are encouraged  to always do their best. Each child comes to our school with his or her own unique personality and learning needs which are nurtured and valued by the teachers. As a smaller school our teachers know each of the students and have the the opportunity to develop excellent teacher/ student relationships. As a smaller school we also know our families and value the opportunity to share their child's learning journey with them.

We have high expectations for every student and our educational program provides intellectually stimulating experiences to challenge thinking and learning and promote independence.

We highly value home / school partnerships and the support of families in the school through their involvement in classroom activities, the Fundraising and Events Group and in many other ways.

The school believes in building strong community links and provides two Playgroups, a 'Kinderlinks Ready Set Go to School' program and welcomes the neighbouring Kinder to use our school facilities.
Our spacious school grounds  and gymnasium are also used by our community for a range of sporting activities throughout the year.

We encourage our students to develop a sense of their place within a community and the contribution that they can make by being well rounded, well mannered positive students.
Through a broad range of experiences our students learn the importance of hard work and effort and the resulting feeling of success when you know you have tried your hardest and achieved your best.

I have the pleasure of working with a very positive and dedicated team of teachers who really do care for our children. We are proud of our students and proud of our school.

If you would like to learn more about our school, please call to arrange a personal tour so that you can see and feel what makes Grovedale West Primary School a very positive learning environment.

Prep Technology - a window to their learning

Our Preps have been selected as one of only twelve schools across the State to participate in a Digital Literacy Technology/ Communication Research Project.  The classroom has been resourced with an excellent supply of technology equipment such as iPads, iPods, digital microscopes, video cameras etc to support their learning.  They are using this technology to communicate their learning with their parents through the Ultranet (computer communication) and through other electronic means such as their Prep Class Blog. Parents have the opportunity to go on line and listen to their children speaking about their learning as well as seeing video and still footage of their work. The children can be seen reading, participating in writing / maths activities or sharing completed work. Parents, teachers and students can then write or record feedback responses to the students about their learning. The students really look forward to hearing or reading their parents responses. This is a wonderful window for parents into their child's learning.

2010

GWPS was selected by the DEECD to be part of an Innovations OECD international research project researching best practice in schools.

GWPS was selected to present at two Innovations Conferences outlining the excellent programs being offered at the school

2011

  • The school is being recognized for implementing an engaging and intellectually stimulating Primary School Science program and over the next three years the school will be involved in an international Research study with Deakin University comparing the practice of teaching science in primary schools in Australia, Taiwan and Germany.
  • The Deaf Facility received a significant grant to access a broad range of ICT resources  to enhance learning access for our deaf students.
  • The school has been selected to be part of a DEECD Innovative Languages Cluster Program and has been provided with excellent resources to provide LOTE Italian in partnership with two neighboring schools. This is an exciting initiative that  provides our students with a broad range of high quality learning experiences in Italian. As part of the initiative the school has been provided with skilled staff and video conferencing equipment broadening language learning access beyond the school.

Prep Box World

The Preps have invited 'everyone' to visit their interactive  Box World exhibition.
They have had over 400 visitors in their first week including the Curator of the Wool Museum where the original Box World was on display.
If you can't get to Box World you can take a look at it on the Prep Blog.

Deaf Sports

Congratulations our students who participated in the deaf Sports in Doncaster on Thursday. They represented the school so positively and demonstrated their personal best in all they did.

Solar Boat Challenge
Our students really enjoyed participating in the Annual Solar Boat Challenge at Science Works last Sunday.
It was great to see the children working together to remodel and enhance their boats throughout the event. We are looking forward to further participation next year with more students keen to become involved.

Canberra

Our year 5 / 6 students will be heading to Canberra for a week of new adventures and experiences.
This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn more about our National Capital and to visit Parliament House and many other interesting venues.

Mr Hebbard
Mr Chris Hebbard our Science teacher was given an Educational Excellence award by the Geelong Advertiser last week. This was exciting news and reward for the great program that he provides for our students.
